Ukrainian attack in Russia kills one, targets oil refinery and tanker
A Ukrainian attack in southwest Russia killed one person and wounded three others, local officials reported Sunday, as Kyiv’s forces continued to target Russian oil facilities. The head of Russia’s Samara region, Gov. Vyacheslav Fedorishchev, said a child was among the injured and that residential homes, apartment buildings, and an unspecified industrial site were damaged. Russian media reported the attack targeted the Syzran Oil Refinery, owned by Rosneft and located about 800 kilometers east of the border, sharing images of black smoke rising over the site. Separately, the governor of Russia’s Rostov region, Yuri Slyusar, said a tanker was damaged in a drone attack in the Azov-Black Sea maritime canal, but the tanker was empty with no threat of an oil spill. Ukraine’s drone strikes on oil refineries and other infrastructure have triggered a widespread fuel crisis in Russia, with gasoline shortages and rationing in multiple regions. Moscow has responded by intensifying its bombardment on Kyiv and other cities, exposing Ukraine’s vulnerability to ballistic missile strikes. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the strikes on Russia’s energy infrastructure as part of a campaign of “long-range sanctions” in response to Moscow’s refusal to halt its four-year invasion. Russia’s Ministry of Defense said Sunday it attacked the ports of Odesa and Chornomorsk in Ukraine’s Odesa region; Ukrainian officials have not yet commented.
