Starmer announces new Russia sanctions and nuclear energy aid for Ukraine

11 reported

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has pledged further sanctions against Russia and hundreds of millions of pounds in energy support for Ukraine during the G7 summit in Évian-les-Bains, France. The summit began on Monday, and Starmer is expected to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday. Starmer will announce sanctions against Russia days after British troops seized a Russian shadow fleet oil tanker in the Channel. He also pledged £210 million for Ukraine’s nuclear plants over the next two years, which he said would “power Ukraine through the winters ahead.” The investment in Urenco, a multinational uranium enrichment company 33% owned by the UK government, will supply enriched uranium to Ukraine’s nuclear power producer, Energoatom. The agreement follows a two-year deal to supply nuclear fuel to Ukraine and is expected to support UK jobs and exports, with a third of the uranium content coming from Urenco’s processing plant in Chester.
