Meta to begin production of new AI chips in September
Meta is on track to start making the latest versions of its AI-specific chip in September, according to an internal memo cited by Reuters. At least one chip completed its testing phase in about six weeks. Meta is working with Broadcom on the chip design and will use Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) to manufacture them. The company is also buying RAM from Samsung, storage from Sandisk, and fiber-optic equipment from Sumitomo Electric. Meta detailed the four new chips under its Meta Training and Inference Accelerator (MTIA) program in March, with some currently in deployment or planned for this year or next. The chips are expected to help Meta save on buying GPUs from Nvidia and AMD, though the company still expects to spend heavily with those providers. Meta has been producing its own AI chips since 2023 and declined to comment on the report.
