England players use Brownlee sports drink for World Cup heat management

12 reported

England’s football players are using a sports drink developed by double Olympic triathlon champion Alistair Brownlee to help control their body temperatures at the World Cup, according to a single-source report. The Football Association placed a large order of CoreCtrl, a product from Brownlee’s company truefuels, before the tournament. Refuelling and heat management have been key parts of Thomas Tuchel’s preparations, with players using cooling vests and palm-cooling devices during training in Kansas City. While past matches have been in mild conditions, heat could become a factor if England progresses to later rounds in Mexico City and Miami. CoreCtrl is an electrolyte-based powder containing L-taurine, which scientists have found helps reduce the temperature at which the body begins to sweat. The FA has a commercial deal with Lucozade but it does not prohibit use of other products. Brownlee said the idea came from scientific work on taurine by scientist Jennifer Peel.
