Study finds no evidence recycling distracts from climate action

6 reported

A four-year study of nearly 2,800 Australians found no evidence that personal climate-friendly choices reduce support for broader climate policies. Researchers from UNSW Sydney and Griffith University tracked participants from 2021 through 2024 as part of the National Climate Action Survey. The study, published on July 23, examined behaviors such as recycling, using reusable cups, taking public transportation, eating greener diets, and cycling to work. Lead author Dr. Omid Ghasemi stated that individual climate actions neither facilitate nor undermine broader climate engagement. The findings challenge the argument that governments and businesses promote small lifestyle changes to distract from more difficult reforms. The researchers noted that personal environmental actions mainly reflect values people already hold rather than changing their political behavior. The study also found a modest drop in collective climate action and policy support between 2021 and 2024, while personal behaviors remained stable.
