Rescuers search rubble after China landslide kills 8, leaves 34 missing
Rescue crews in the southwestern Chinese city of Chongqing are using excavators to search for survivors after a landslide killed at least eight people and left 34 missing. The landslide occurred early Friday in Pengshui County, on the outskirts of Chongqing, when massive amounts of rocks and soil buried more than 10 residential buildings. Authorities evacuated over 1,100 people from 21 buildings in the potential impact zone within a one-kilometer radius of the disaster site. On Saturday, rescue crews aided by dogs and detectors found signs of life, confirming at least one survivor was still trapped. Authorities said one of 10 survivors was discharged from the hospital, while the other nine were in stable condition. The rain-triggered landslide contained about 18,000 cubic meters of rocks and debris, according to Wang Chuanjun, head of Planning and Natural Resources in Pengshui County.
