OpenAI releases new Codex tools and plug-ins for enterprise users

OpenAI released a new set of capabilities for its Codex tool on Tuesday, aimed at expanding its use in the workplace. The company also published an internal report on how Codex is used for knowledge work, finding its applications extend beyond software engineering. According to a blog post introducing the report, Codex now has more than 5 million weekly active users, up more than 6x since the desktop app launched in February. While developers remain the largest user group, knowledge workers now represent about 20 percent of users and are growing more than three times as fast. To further attract those users, OpenAI released six plug-ins for specific jobs: data analytics, creative production, sales, product design, equity investing, and investment banking. The plug-ins are available from within the Codex app and bundle integrations, instructions, and context to approximate a specific job. OpenAI also introduced a new Sites feature that allows Codex to output its work as a hosted interactive website, partnering with companies including Wix, Base44, Replit, Lovable, Figma, and Emergent. A new Annotations feature lets users designate specific parts of a document within Codex for more precise commands. These enterprise features come three weeks after OpenAI launched a joint venture for enterprise clients called the OpenAI Deployment Company, which includes more than $4 billion in funding from global investment firms.
