El-Sayed Discusses Public Health Crises in Michigan Senate Bid

8 reported

Michigan senatorial candidate Abdul El-Sayed, an epidemiologist and former Detroit health officer, discussed the state’s recent public health challenges in an interview with WIRED. El-Sayed is in a tight Democratic primary for Michigan’s open Senate seat and has received endorsements from Senators Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. He cited Canadian wildfire smoke causing some of the most polluted air on Earth in Michigan and the highest number of cyclosporiasis cases in the country as key issues. El-Sayed attributed these problems to cuts by the Department of Government Efficiency, which he said downsized the federal lab that tests for cyclosporiasis. He stated that addressing election spending and investing in public health infrastructure are central to his campaign. El-Sayed also noted Michigan has the highest level of anti-solar and anti-wind ordinances in the country.
