Booker Discusses Newark ICE Protest and Immigration Funding Bill
In an interview with NPR’s Steve Inskeep, Senator Cory Booker commented on protests at an ICE detention facility in Newark, New Jersey, and the upcoming congressional agenda. Booker stated that people from outside the state, including the Proud Boys and Greg Bovino, are coming to the protests to escalate violence and distract from the conditions inside the facility. He said he has been monitoring the situation and working with the congressional delegation to ensure the right to peacefully protest. Regarding an immigration funding bill, Booker said he will not vote for more funding for “a reckless, out-of-control and very cruel agency.” He criticized a proposed $1.776 billion fund that he described as a “smash-and-grab slush fund” that he said could go to people who beat police on January 6. Booker stated that Democrats will introduce amendments to block that fund and force votes on President Trump’s “vanity projects.” He expressed hope that Republicans would oppose the fund, noting that the Republican-controlled Congress has not provided sufficient oversight.
