India's Toonz Media Group and Tokyo-based Supersub LLC have announced a co-production deal for "The Taste of Water," an animated feature documentary about Japanese sake. The deal was unveiled at the Annecy Animation Film Festival. Directed by Riki Ohkanda and executive produced by Ryo Nakajima, the film is currently in production. It follows a road-movie structure with five chapters covering sake's fundamentals, history, relationship with Japanese culture, industry pressures, and potential futures. The documentary will use live-action footage converted into anime-influenced visuals using AI-assisted rotoscoping and 3D Gaussian Splatting. The film is targeting festival circuits in 2027.
