Adichie accuses Lagos hospital of blocking son's death inquest

Adichie accuses Lagos hospital of blocking son’s death inquest

7 reported

Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has accused Euracare hospital in Lagos of obstructing a coronial inquest into the death of her 21-month-old son, Nkanu. The inquest had been due to start in April, but Adichie alleges the hospital has "stalled and muddied and obfuscated" the process and has asked Nigeria's Federal High Court to block the inquiry. An investigation panel set up by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria had previously found a possible case of medical negligence against the hospital. Adichie stated that the hospital noted her son's death was from bacterial meningitis, but she said there was no medical evidence to support that claim on his death certificate. The hospital has expressed "deepest sympathies" but denied wrongdoing, saying its care met international standards. The BBC has approached Euracare for comment.
