Social media platforms introduce user-controlled algorithm tools
Social media companies are introducing tools that allow users to personalize their recommendation algorithms, according to a TechCrunch report. Apps including Threads, Instagram, and TikTok have begun offering features that let people influence what appears in their feeds beyond traditional “Not Interested” buttons. The shift moves feeds away from a one-size-fits-all model toward a more customizable experience, similar to a streaming service. For users, the advantage is a feed tailored to their interests, while for platforms it boosts engagement by displaying content users are most likely to consume. Threads launched a “Your Algo” feature on June 16, 2026, building on its earlier “Dear Algo” tool. Instagram introduced a “Your Algorithm” tool in early June that lets users view and control the topics shaping their recommendations. TikTok’s “Manage Topics” tool, launched in 2024, allows users to adjust preferences for topics like sports and travel, and was expanded in 2025 with AI-powered Smart Keyword Filters.
