Dippold and Murai Discuss ‘Widow’s Bay’ Creative Process

IndieWire reports that series creator Katie Dippold and director Hiro Murai will receive the Visionary Award at the IndieWire Honors Spring 2026 ceremony on June 4. The Apple TV+ series “Widow’s Bay,” described as a scary haunted island story that is also funny, has been rolling out over recent weeks. Dippold said the show incorporates her childhood memory of visiting a haunted house on the Long Branch, New Jersey boardwalk, which she described as “very questionable.” Murai noted that Dippold’s focus on a grounded reality where comedy and horror sit on top of each other reframed the project for him. The show was sold to Apple in 2024 after the streamer bought the pitch in the room, which Dippold called “a very rare Hollywood experience.” Dippold originally imagined the story as a spec script for “Parks and Rec” almost 20 years ago.
