Scottish marine science group appoints ocean as board trustee
The Scottish Association for Marine Science (Sams), a 140-year-old organization based in Oban, Scotland, has appointed the ocean as a trustee on its board. The initiative, which began last month, ensures that a designated representative gives a view on how board decisions would affect the ocean’s ability to function as an ecosystem. Sams director Nick Owens said the move was inspired by a growing appetite for legal recognition of the rights of nature and by Indigenous cultures in North America. The ocean trustee, environmental lawyer Helen Mitcheson, has a say in all discussions but does not have a veto. Sams is not the first to adopt this concept; the eco beauty manufacturer Faith in Nature gave nature a formal vote on corporate decisions in 2022. About 25 organizations in Britain, France, Belgium, the US, and Australia have since followed suit.
