Runner gored in face at San Fermin bull run festival
One runner was gored in the face during a chaotic bull run at Spain’s San Fermin festival on Saturday, according to a single-source report. The six bulls and accompanying steers charged through crowds of thrill-seekers on the narrow street course in Pamplona. The run lasted two and a half minutes, from the pen to the bull ring. The University of Navarra Hospital reported that one runner was pierced by a horn in the face, while 12 more people needed medical treatment for various knocks. A black bull broke away from the pack early in the 875-meter run and struck a person in the face with a horn, though it was not clear if that caused the goring. Saturday’s run was the fifth morning of the eight-day festival, which this year marks 100 years since the publication of Ernest Hemingway’s novel “The Sun Also Rises.” The last death at the San Fermin bull runs occurred in 2009, but gorings and broken bones are common, partly due to the large number of novice runners and foreign tourists.
