Iranian national arrested in Montenegro on US hacking charges
Montenegrin police announced the arrest of a 39-year-old Iranian national wanted by the United States for mass hacking attacks that caused $3.4 billion in damage. The man, who holds both Iranian and Turkish citizenship, was located in the coastal town of Kotor and arrested Thursday at the request of the U.S. and the FBI. According to a police statement, the suspect is wanted by a court in New York on charges including conspiracy to commit computer fraud, hacking, and identity theft. The statement said the suspect carried out mass hacking attacks on U.S. infrastructure from 2013 onward, targeting more than 150 universities. The illegally obtained data was used by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and Iranian universities, police said. Extradition proceedings will be handled by a court in the capital Podgorica. Montenegro is a U.S. ally and NATO member.
