Zelenskyy and European leaders discuss scaling up Ukraine’s air defences
Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in London on Sunday night to discuss urgent air defence and deep-strike needs for Ukraine. The meeting followed a Russian drone strike that damaged a spent nuclear fuel storage centre near the Chornobyl power plant, which did not cause a radiation spike. The leaders condemned Russian missile and drone attacks and called on Vladimir Putin to agree to an immediate ceasefire with the current line of contact as a starting point for negotiations. They will seek further support at the G7 summit on 15 June and the Nato summit in July. Zelenskyy stated Ukraine would not “silently die” and that talks would focus on cooperation for the security of all of Europe. The meeting occurred after a week of heightened hostilities and after Putin rejected Zelenskyy’s proposal for face-to-face talks.
