Trump says anti-fraud efforts uncovering billions, could balance budget
President Donald Trump on Wednesday praised Vice President JD Vance’s anti-fraud efforts, claiming Republicans are uncovering enough government fraud to potentially balance the federal budget. In a Truth Social post, Trump wrote that “billions of dollars” in fraud is being found and that if all fraud were uncovered, the budget could be balanced and taxes reduced. Trump also criticized Democrats for opposing the investigations, suggesting they are “in on the act.” The anti-fraud task force, established by executive order in March and chaired by Vance, had identified nearly $6.3 billion in government contracts tied to potentially fraudulent businesses, according to a Fox News Digital report in April. Officials said nearly 400 businesses would be required to prove legitimate operations. Trump did not provide evidence that fraud findings would eliminate the federal deficit, and the administration has not publicly released figures showing identified fraud totals approaching the size of the annual deficit. Democrats have argued Republicans conflate fraud, waste and policy disagreements and have questioned whether projected savings can be realized.
