Runway launches AI model router for generative media

8 reported

Runway introduced the Runway Media Router on Thursday, a tool that automatically selects the best image, video, or audio generation model based on a developer’s priority for quality, speed, or cost. The router is available through Runway Dev, the startup’s developer platform released earlier this month, which provides API access to third-party models alongside Runway’s own. Runway claims this is the first model router built specifically for generative media, as similar routers have become common for large language models. The launch marks a shift for Runway from an AI video startup into infrastructure for companies building with generative media. Customers including Adobe, Cloudflare, ElevenLabs, Expedia, Shutterstock, and Quora use Runway Dev to integrate media generation into their own products. The router’s intelligence layer is based on Runway’s in-house creative team’s expertise in evaluating output across media types, such as how video models handle motion or how voice models handle lip syncing. Runway’s chief product officer, Anthony Maggio, told TechCrunch that the router fits the company’s promise of being a one-stop shop for developers integrating generative media models.

The launch follows Runway replacing unlimited subscription plans with token-based pricing weeks earlier, which drew criticism from some users.
Runway’s last AI video model release, Gen 4.5, was in December 2025, and its text-to-video and image-to-video models no longer lead rankings.
