Robin Byrd Says Internet Ruined Porn, HBO Doc Covers Her Legacy

8 reported

A new HBO documentary titled "Bang My Box: The Robin Byrd Story" profiles Robin Byrd, a former adult film star and host of a New York City public access show that ran from 1977 to 1998. In an interview with WIRED, Byrd, now 71, stated that the internet ruined porn, describing the analog era as "soft" and "artsy" compared to digital, which she called "very harsh" and "cold." She also said she retired in the late 1990s partly because she felt the internet was too unwieldy and difficult to control, noting that her show was accepted in New York but might not be understood in rural religious towns. The documentary, directed by Jyllian Gunther and Stephanie Schwam, hails Byrd as a sex-positive icon who advocated for free speech and the LGBTQ community, promoted safe sex during the HIV/AIDS epidemic, and led a lawsuit against Time Warner Cable over censorship. Byrd also discussed her phone sex line, which she started to pay for her show, and said her income from it dropped 50 percent when Spectrum switched to streaming. The film is streaming on HBO Max as of Tuesday.
