Putin hosts ASEAN leaders in Kazan to strengthen business ties
Russian President Vladimir Putin hosted leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations on Wednesday in Kazan, Russia, for a two-day summit aimed at expanding business and other ties with the regional bloc. The meeting marks the 35th anniversary of Russia-ASEAN relations, according to Kremlin foreign affairs adviser Yuri Ushakov. Ushakov stated that the agenda includes exchanging views on global and regional issues and reviewing efforts to develop Russia-ASEAN ties, with participants set to underline their adherence to forming a just and democratic multipolar world order based on international law and the UN Charter. Putin co-chaired the summit with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., whose country holds the association’s rotating presidency. Putin also held bilateral meetings with Brunei’s Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah and Malaysia's Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, and met with Turkey's Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on the sidelines. The article notes that some ASEAN members, including the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam, have either imported Russian crude oil or expressed interest in purchasing it after global fuel prices soared following the war in Iran.
