NHS trust under corporate manslaughter investigation over Nottingham attacks

The NHS trust that treated Valdo Calocane before the 2023 Nottingham attacks is being investigated by police for corporate manslaughter. Calocane, who has paranoid schizophrenia, was sentenced to an indefinite hospital order after fatally stabbing three people on 13 June 2023. A public inquiry heard that the Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation trust had sectioned Calocane four times between 2020 and 2022, and that a doctor had warned he could “end up killing someone.” Despite this, Calocane was discharged from mental health services in September 2022 because he had failed to attend appointments and healthcare workers “couldn’t find him.” Northumbria police confirmed they are carrying out the criminal inquiry on behalf of the Nottinghamshire force. The trust said it is cooperating with the investigation, which could result in substantial fines and changes to its leadership.
