Netflix reportedly exploring always-on live TV channels
Netflix is reportedly considering launching always-on live TV channels that would stream content continuously, according to The Wall Street Journal. The move would allow subscribers to leave a channel running in the background rather than committing to specific shows. This would put Netflix in more direct competition with free, ad-supported services like Pluto TV and Tubi and could boost its ad business, as live programming typically does not allow ad skipping. The WSJ also reports that Netflix is exploring bundles similar to those offered by Apple and Amazon, with Peacock among the services discussed as a potential partner. Netflix did not respond to a request for comment. The reported plans come as Netflix has experimented with short-form video, video podcasts, and a gaming app for kids to increase engagement. Earlier this week, Bloomberg reported that Netflix is concerned about audience declines between seasons of its original shows, and Nielsen data showed the streamer accounted for 7.8% of TV viewing in April. Variety also reported on Friday that Netflix is in talks to buy Letterboxd, a social platform for movie fans.
