Hugging Face CEO discusses shift from rented to open source AI
Hugging Face CEO Clem Delangue stated that open source AI is booming, with the company growing into a platform similar to GitHub for AI, where builders share and download open models and datasets. According to Delangue, roughly half of the Fortune 500 now uses Hugging Face. He observed a recurring pattern: companies initially use frontier APIs but shift to open source models as scaling costs increase. Delangue discussed these trends on the TechCrunch Equity podcast with host Rebecca Bellan. He addressed the significance of the open versus closed source debate following Anthropic’s halted Fable release. Delangue also expressed concern that a small number of large companies could end up controlling the AI industry.
