Bangladesh takes unassailable 2-0 ODI series lead over Australia

10 reported

Bangladesh secured a landmark first ODI series victory against six-time world champions Australia on Thursday, winning by five wickets in a rain-delayed match in Dhaka. Australia, without injured captain Mitchell Marsh, lost the toss and elected to bat first, but Bangladesh’s pace bowlers Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman dismissed top-order batters Matthew Short, Cooper Connolly, and Matthew Renshaw for no runs. This marked only the fourth time in history that a team lost all three of its top-order batters for no runs. Josh Inglis steadied the innings with 34 off 37, and half-centuries from Marnus Labuschagne (55 not out) and Xavier Bartlett lifted Australia to 187-8 before rain halted play. Bangladesh was set a revised target of 192 from 41 overs and reached it with contributions from Soumya Sarkar (42), Najmul Hossain Shanto (42), and Towhid Hrdoy (40 not out). The win gave Bangladesh an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series, following an 86-run Duckworth-Lewis-Stern defeat for Australia on Tuesday.
