Tariff refund portal opens for direct payers only
The Trump administration launched a tariff refund portal on Monday, following a Supreme Court ruling in February that struck down many of the president’s tariffs. The refund process, called CAPE (Consolidated Administration and Processing of Entries), is legally required to return more than $166 billion in revenue those tariffs generated. However, only businesses or individuals who paid tariffs directly to the U.S. government can apply for refunds. Consumers who absorbed the cost through higher prices on imported goods or products with imported components are not eligible. A lower court ordered the refund process to move forward, and the administration is currently complying. President Trump has indicated he may try to avoid returning the money, potentially through slow-walking payments or filing another legal appeal. The Supreme Court did not specify how the refund process should work, and some tariffs remain in place, with the current tariff rate about five times higher than before Trump took office, according to the Budget Lab at Yale.
