According to ratings reported by Fox Sports and Telemundo, the World Cup has opened with record-breaking viewership. Friday’s U.S. Soccer Men’s National Team victory over Paraguay drew nearly 16 million viewers, making it the most-watched USMNT World Cup telecast in English-language history. Separately, Telemundo reported that Thursday’s Mexico win over South Africa was the most-watched World Cup game in Spanish-language history. The U.S.-Paraguay match, played at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, averaged 15,986,000 viewers across Fox, Fox One and Tubi, with a peak of 18.86 million viewers. That telecast was up 106% from the first USMNT group stage match of the 2022 Men’s World Cup on Fox. The Mexico-South Africa match also set records as the most-streamed Mexico World Cup match and the most-watched World Cup opening game regardless of language.

Thursday’s Mexico win over South Africa (2-0) had 12.1 million viewers, the most-watched World Cup game in Spanish-language history.
The Mexico-South Africa match was the most-streamed Mexico World Cup match and most-streamed group stage match in Spanish-language history.
It was the most-watched World Cup opening game regardless of language.
The U.S.-Paraguay match also averaged 8.9 million viewers on Telemundo, Peacock and Telemundo’s streaming platforms, the most-watched USMNT World Cup match on Spanish-language TV.
The U.S.-Paraguay match was up 106% from the 2022 USMNT-Wales match (7.76 million viewers) on Fox, and up 156% on Telemundo (3.5 million viewers in 2022).
World Cup coverage continues Saturday with Haiti vs. Scotland at 8 p.m. ET and Australia vs. Türkiye at 11 p.m. ET.
