Steven Spielberg's new film "Disclosure Day," releasing June 11 from Universal Pictures, returns the director to the topic of extraterrestrial life nearly 50 years after "Close Encounters of the Third Kind." Spielberg, 79, said in an interview that while he considered his 1977 film "speculative," he does not consider "Disclosure Day" science fiction, calling it "much more reflective of the world as it is evolving." The director stated he has changed his mind about alien life due to what he called "overwhelming" circumstantial evidence, and was inspired by 2023 House Subcommittee on National Security hearings on UAPs. The film stars Josh O'Connor as a cybersecurity whistleblower, with Colin Firth, Colman Domingo, and Emily Blunt also in lead roles. Spielberg said the movie's most ardent message is about empathy, which he described as "sometimes in short supply." He also expressed faith in the future of movies, noting that audience numbers, while not at pre-COVID levels, are "more robust than it has been for many years."
