Nevada primary voters choose candidates for governor, US House seats

8 reported

Nevadans are voting in a closed primary Tuesday to select party nominees for two closely watched congressional seats and the governor’s race, among other contests. The state is dealing with an affordable housing shortage, rising energy demand from data centers, and federal cuts to key state programs. The governor’s race is considered one of the most competitive in the country this fall, and holding the 3rd Congressional District is seen as crucial for Democrats’ hopes of retaking the U.S. House. Several primaries feature matchups between candidates backed by party leaders and political outsiders promising change. The Republican primary to replace retiring Rep. Mark Amodei in the 2nd District includes a Trump-endorsed loyalist and a former state senator backed by the governor. In the 3rd District, Republicans are competing to face Democratic Rep. Susie Lee in a district with a narrow Democratic registration advantage and a history of close elections.

What’s reported

Nevada has a closed primary, meaning only registered Democrats and Republicans vote.
Gov. Joe Lombardo, a Republican, is considered one of the most vulnerable governors in the country this fall.
Democratic candidates for governor include state Attorney General Aaron Ford, backed by the Democratic congressional delegation and former Vice President Kamala Harris, and county commissioner Alexis Hill.
In the 2nd District Republican primary, President Donald Trump endorsed David Flippo, while Rep. Mark Amodei and Gov. Lombardo backed James Settelmeyer.
The 2nd District has 70,000 more registered Republicans than Democrats and has been held by a Republican since the 1980s.
In the 3rd District, Republican candidates include Trump-backed Marty O’Donnell, Jeff Gunter, Aury Nagy, and Tera Anderson.
The attorney general primary features Democratic candidates state Senate Majority Leader Nicole Cannizzaro and Treasurer Zach Conine, and Republican candidates Adriana Guzmán Fralick and Danny Tarkanian.
Several Republicans are running for secretary of state, including Jim Marchant, Sharron Angle, and Shirley Folkins-Roberts.
