According to a report from Variety, the horror film “Backrooms” has become A24’s highest-grossing worldwide release and the studio’s first movie to surpass $200 million in ticket sales. The film, directed by YouTuber Kane Parsons, has generated $212 million globally, including $135 million in North America, after only 10 days in theaters. It overtook Timothee Chalamet’s “Marty Supreme,” which had previously held the studio’s record with $191 million worldwide. The film is based on Parsons’ popular web series about liminal spaces and follows a furniture store owner who finds a secret doorway leading to endless rooms. A24 and Chernin Entertainment co-financed the film for roughly $10 million, making it already hugely profitable. A sequel has not been confirmed, but Parsons has teased the idea of turning “Backrooms” into a film franchise.
