Swedish researchers catalog rare earth deposits to reduce reliance on China
Researchers at Uppsala University are studying Sweden’s mineral deposits to develop a more sustainable process for producing rare earth elements and magnets. Led by Professor Martin Sahlberg, the team is cataloging the full mixture of elements in Swedish deposits rather than targeting a single metal. The goal is to design magnets whose chemical composition matches naturally available materials, reducing processing and environmental impact. Sahlberg noted that China halted rare earth exports during the recent trade war, highlighting geopolitical risks. Sweden has known deposits in Kiruna, Bergslagen, and Norra Kärr, and the researchers aim to create a scientific foundation for domestic extraction. The interdisciplinary effort involves geologists, materials physicists, and engineers working to identify the most sustainable route from rock to magnet. Sahlberg described the work as application-inspired basic research in a technologically important area.
