The finalists include images of newborn fish, a native wasp, satellite trails across the night sky, blue mushrooms, shy trees, and glowing seas. One featured image shows the mushroom species Mycena interrupta growing on decaying wood, described as a saprotrophic fungus that plays a vital role in breaking down organic matter and returning nutrients to the ecosystem. The photograph was taken by Ryan Shan. The article, published by The Guardian on June 8, 2026, notes that this is a single-source report.
