Hungary protest opposes government plan to remove President Sulyok
Several thousand people gathered in Budapest on Thursday to protest the Hungarian government's plan to remove President Tamás Sulyok from office. The demonstration, organized by former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's Fidesz party, took place at the Sándor Palace in the Castle District. The new center-right government led by Prime Minister Péter Magyar, who defeated Orbán in an April election, has proposed a constitutional amendment to end Sulyok's term. The amendment would also set term limits for parliament members, implement judicial reforms, and create an authority to investigate alleged financial abuses by Orbán's government. Orbán and Fidesz have called the move an assault on the rule of law, while Magyar argues Sulyok failed to prevent antidemocratic steps during Orbán's tenure. The protest, titled "Stop Tyranny," was promoted by Orbán on social media, though he did not attend.
