78th Emmy Nominations Announced; Mariska Hargitay to Host

9 reported

The 78th Emmy nominations were announced Wednesday morning, with previous winners Liza Colón-Zayas and Jeff Hiller joining TV Academy chair Cris Abrego to reveal the nominees. The majority of categories were announced from the Wolf Theatre at the Academy’s Saban Media Center starting at 8:20 a.m. ET, while two categories — outstanding variety series and outstanding reality competition — were revealed earlier on NBC’s “Today” show. This year’s Emmys will air live from L.A. Live’s Peacock Theatre on Monday, Sept. 14 at 8 p.m. ET, hosted by Mariska Hargitay, marking the first time a woman has hosted the show in 15 years. The TV Academy merged talk and scripted variety into one “outstanding variety series” field, now an “area” award where nominees are not competing against each other but must get at least 90% of voters to say “yes” to merit an Emmy. Other rule changes include renaming the TV movie category to “outstanding movie,” new AI guidelines, and expanded eligibility in several categories. A total of 555 programs were submitted across 14 program categories, down 7.5% from last year’s 600 entrants. The Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremonies will take place Sept. 5 and Sept. 6.
