AI developers shift focus from chatbots to physical world models
A growing number of AI entrepreneurs and scientists are pivoting from language-based chatbots to developing "world models" that teach AI systems how to react in physical environments, according to a report from ABC News. Computer scientist Louis Castricato quit his doctoral studies at Brown University and founded Overworld, a startup building AI that can understand and navigate a world, not just words. AI pioneer Yann LeCun left his role as Meta's chief AI scientist last year to start Advanced Machine Intelligence Labs in Paris, focusing on world models. Fei-Fei Li, founder of World Labs, described world models as "one of the most important and most overloaded terms in AI today." The shift is driven by perceived limitations in large language models, which cannot, for example, pick up a coffee mug or understand physical interaction. Venture capitalists are investing in world model companies, including Overworld, Causal Labs for weather prediction, and Extropic for specialized computer chips. Li proposed a taxonomy dividing world models into three categories: renderers, simulators, and planners.
