Saudi doctor convicted of murder in 2024 Magdeburg Christmas market attack
A Saudi doctor was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison on Friday for the December 20, 2024 car-ramming attack on a Christmas market in Magdeburg, Germany, which killed six people. The defendant, 51-year-old Taleb al-Abdulmohsen, was found to carry “particularly serious” guilt by the state court in Magdeburg, meaning he will not be eligible for parole after 15 years as is standard in Germany. The attack, which lasted just over a minute, killed five women and a boy and wounded many others. Investigators stated the attack was carried out with a rented BMW X3 that reached speeds of up to 48 kph (30 mph), and that the defendant acted without accomplices, apparently motivated by dissatisfaction with a legal dispute and failed criminal complaints. Officials noted the suspect does not fit the usual profile of extremist attackers, describing himself as an ex-Muslim critical of Islam who expressed support for the far right online. The defendant arrived in Germany in 2006 and had permanent residency.
