‘Sumpa Kingdom’ Screens at Shanghai Festival, Director Discusses Adaptation
The film "Sumpa Kingdom," a drama set in Xizang, was selected for the Belt and Road Film Week sidebar at the Shanghai International Film Festival and held a post-screening event. Director Lhapal Gyal, producer Sonam Gyal, and cast members Tenzin Tsundue, Joy, and Sonam Wangmo attended. Adapted from a novel by writer Miaolian, the story spans two time periods: 1995, following a rural doctor who takes in an orphaned Tibetan baby girl, and 2024, where the grown woman seeks to uncover historical enigmas about the ancient Sumpa kingdom. Lhapal Gyal stated the team retained the spiritual core of the source material while reworking character relationships and narrative structure, drawing on their own encounters with Xizang's landscapes and culture. The film marks Tenzin Tsundue's feature debut, and he noted his background as a former tour guide informed his role. The 28th Shanghai International Film Festival runs through June 21.
