Pew Study: Most Americans Distrust Government and Business on AI Regulation

A new Pew Research Center study released Wednesday finds that roughly two-thirds of Americans believe artificial intelligence is advancing too quickly, even as a majority of adults now use chatbots. The survey of 5,119 U.S. adults conducted in February shows 40% of respondents think AI will ultimately be worse for society. Most Americans expressed little confidence in either the U.S. government or U.S. businesses to regulate the technology effectively. Specifically, 67% had little to no confidence in the government’s ability to regulate AI, while 59% had little to no confidence that companies could responsibly develop it. More Democrats than Republicans were skeptical of government regulation. The study also found that 71% of respondents agreed AI will make personal data less secure.
