Hampshire and Isle of Wight police chief constable Alexis Boon has apologized for the arrest and handcuffing of Henry Nowak, who was later stabbed to death by Vickrum Digwa. Boon told the BBC the footage of the incident was “a tragedy” and said he understands why the family is upset with police. He confirmed an independent investigation is underway and asked the public not to prejudge its findings. Separately, a former police officer, Christi Hill, has been forced into hiding after being falsely identified online as one of the officers involved in the arrest. The home secretary, Shabana Mahmood, said a male officer had also been misidentified and had to move out of his home. In other news, chancellor Rachel Reeves announced plans for a Greater Cambridge development corporation as part of the Oxford to Cambridge growth corridor. Prime Minister Keir Starmer apologized for the 1972 killing of five people in Belfast, an event Sinn Féin MP Paul Maskey called the “Springhill massacre.” The Russian ambassador to the UK, Andrei Kelin, was summoned to the Foreign Office after a Russian drone struck a building in Romania. Cabinet Office minister Nick Thomas-Symonds rejected claims of a cover-up regarding the use of disappearing messages by the prime minister, and Reeves confirmed she also uses disappearing messages.
