Patreon lays off 20% of workforce, citing market changes

Patreon is laying off 20% of its workforce, or 93 people, CEO Jack Conte told employees on Thursday. In a memo shared online by the company, Conte said the platform’s core business is strong but must respond to market changes and adjust its cost structure. Conte wrote that AI has fundamentally transformed the tech industry, but he clarified the cuts are not because the company wants to replace employees with AI. He stated that AI tools are not substitutes for human creativity and connection, and that Patreon’s strategy is based on the value of human creativity. Beyond the layoffs, Patreon is restructuring by flattening its organizational chart and refocusing teams on top priorities. Affected employees will receive at least 16 weeks of severance pay, additional weeks for years worked, healthcare through year-end, and a $1,500 laptop stipend. Last week, Patreon announced a partnership with Cloudflare to block AI bots from training on creators’ work without permission.
