Osaka wears all-white kimono for Wimbledon first round
Naomi Osaka arrived for her opening match at Wimbledon wearing an all-white kimono, a design she said pays respect to her Japanese heritage while adhering to the tournament’s all-white dress code. The 28-year-old four-time major winner defeated French player Elsa Jacquemot 6-1 7-5. Osaka explained that the kimono was inspired by Japanese culture and the film “Kill Bill,” specifically Lucy Liu’s character. Because she played on an outside court, Osaka was escorted through the crowds, where fans stopped to look at her outfit. She said she found the reaction fun and heard people compliment the kimono. Osaka has previously worn a gold dress resembling the Eiffel Tower at the French Open and a jellyfish-inspired outfit at the Australian Open. She noted that wearing such outfits adds pressure to perform well so she can continue wearing them.
