The new Musée du cinéma d’animation (Museum of Animated Film) in Annecy, France, is featuring a collection of films and artifacts from the National Film Board of Canada (NFB), with many works set to join the museum’s permanent exhibition as part of a partnership agreement. The museum opened this month within the newly established Cité internationale du cinéma d’animation, located in the former Haras National Horse Stables, now known as Haras Park. It is described as France’s first institution devoted to the history, techniques, and forms of animation, offering an immersive journey through the art’s evolution. The permanent exhibition includes some 20 audiovisual installations, including an immersive installation with seven themed screens highlighting NFB films by Norman McLaren, Ryan Larkin, and others. Artifacts from the NFB’s collection, such as McLaren’s pedagogical montages and a rare box of handmade sound cards, are also on display. The NFB has historic ties with Annecy, with over 350 NFB films screened at the festival since 1960, winning 66 awards. The NFB has earned 79 Oscar nominations and 12 Oscars, and ranks second in Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film nominations with 39, behind Disney.
